Why Work in Primary Care?

Working in primary care offers a rewarding and varied career; with a broad mix of roles, across many different settings, a strong sense of team spirit and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with the local community. Working at the forefront of patient care, primary care teams are able to work with patients on a one-to-one basis, often over a prolonged period of time, creating lasting bonds with patients and their family members or carers.

In a surgery you are likely to be working alongside a team of many various professionals all working together for the local population.

Unlike secondary care general practice generally has more structured hours, meaning for some it is easier to achieve a good work life balance.

Support

We know that our NHS people are often faced with significant stresses. The NHS can only achieve the extraordinary things for patients that it does, if the safety, health and wellbeing of our people is recognised as a key priority.

If you need someone to talk to, there is a confidential 24/7 text support service, you can access by texting FRONTLINE to 85258.  This service is available to all our NHS colleagues who have had a tough day, who are feeling worried or overwhelmed, or who have a lot on their mind and need to talk it through.

Training

Every practice or PCN has access to training hub whose role it is to attract, develop and support the primary care workforce of today and tomorrow, equipping them with the skills and knowledge they need to meet the health needs of our population.

Wellbeing

The NHS People Promise focuses on looking after people, investing in both physical and mental health and wellbeing, alongside giving people flexibility in how they work, access to career development, having autonomy and experiencing inclusivity.

Promoting and supporting wellbeing at work helps people to flourish and reach their potential by creating an environment that promotes contentment.  One way of doing this is integrating wellbeing throughout a place of work so that it becomes second nature, from leadership and managing people, through to creating and sustaining a supportive culture and an environment where colleagues can recognise and talk openly about any problems they are having.
